Adults with congenital heart disease require expert medical care for continued survival and quality of life. Patients need advice about issues such as exercise, employability, insurance difficulties, endocarditis prophylaxis and health care issues. In addition, education regarding cardiac anatomy, prognosis, and potential future cardiovascular problems is important. Facilities and personnel need to be available to provide this complex, multidisciplinary care. In order to best care for patients with congenital heart disease, the cardiologists at Mayo Clinic established the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinic 15 years ago. Over 3,000 patients have been cared for in the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinic since it opened, making it one of the largest specialized adult conenital heart clinics in the world.
The doctors of the Mayo Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinic have special expertise and training in all aspects of complex congenital heart disease, including cyanotic heart disease, pulmonary hypertension, and the management of pregnancy and contraception.
Close cooperation and interaction exists between the highly specialized adult congenital heart disease cardiologists and the cardiovascular surgeons who have special expertise in congenital heart disease, the pediatric cardiologists, the high-risk obstetricians and any other special health professionals that might benefit the patient.
