Treatment

Mayo Clinic doctors with training in heart disease (cardiologists), heart surgeons and other specialists with experience in treating people with all types of congenital heart disease work with you to determine the most appropriate treatment. Cardiologists who have special training in congenital heart disease (congenital cardiologists) and surgeons care for people who have congenital heart disease.

Your treatment depends on the type and severity of your condition. Many congenital heart diseases can be treated with surgery. If your congenital heart disease is severe, you may need treatment or surgery as a child. However, if your condition isn't severe or you're not experiencing any symptoms, you may not need treatment until you're an adult. Some congenital heart diseases require no treatment.
