The Sports Medicine Center at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota provides baseline concussion testing for high school and junior college athletes in contact sports in the Rochester and Southeast Minnesota region, including the Minnesota Ice Hawks, a local Junior A Hockey affiliate. There is no charge for this testing.
The center also performs comprehensive concussion evaluations on many college and professional athletes referred to Mayo Clinic.
The multidisciplinary concussion evaluation and treatment team is led by Michael Stuart, M.D., Jon Finnoff, M.D., and athletic trainer Chad Eickhoff. The team involves orthopedic and physical medicine and rehabilitation doctors, physical therapists, neuropsychologists, and staff members from neurology and physical medicine and rehabilitation who have special expertise in brain trauma evaluation.
The Sports Medicine Center staff continually educates medical providers at local and national meetings about the importance of proper identification and treatment of concussion.
Concussion experts from the United States, Canada and Europe as well as representatives from the NHL and USA Hockey gathered in Rochester to develop an action plan on concussion evaluation and treatment. The Ice Hockey Summit: Action on Concussion was led by Dr. Stuart, chief medical officer of USA Hockey.
