The inaugural event, held last February, drew international attention with approximately 7,000 participants from 15 countries and more than 2,000 volunteers. Over 300 Mayo Clinic employees from all three campuses participated in the half or full marathon. More than $800,000 was raised to help fight breast cancer, with proceeds going to the Donna Hicken Foundation and Mayo Clinic.
26.2 with Donna | The National Marathon to Fight Breast Cancer will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009 near the Mayo Clinic Campus in Jacksonville, Florida. Located near Jacksonville Beach, runners will enjoy panoramic views of the intracoastal waterway and tidal marshland, and meander through the unique beach communities of Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, and Atlantic Beach. A 2.5 mile stretch of the course will detour onto the beautiful hard-packed sand of this Florida coastline, which is perfect for running! A half-marathon will be offered as well.
As the only marathon in the country dedicated solely to raising money to fight breast cancer, the race proceeds will go directly to The Donna Hicken Foundation, an entity which funds the critical needs of underserved women with breast cancer. The foundation has pledged to donate the majority of funds raised to Mayo Clinic for research and its multidisciplinary Breast Clinic, which specializes in the detection and treatment of breast cancer.
