Research in the Cochlear Implant Program at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota has focused on current and future implant technology, including hybrid cochlear implants, combination of electric and acoustic hearing, bilateral cochlear implantation in adults and children, and speech perception and psychoacoustic properties of hearing in cochlear implant recipients.
Mayo researchers are working to evaluate the effectiveness of a newly developed "hybrid," shallow-insertion-depth cochlear implant that stimulates the area at the base of the cochlea electrically, while also providing traditional acoustic amplification. This research has the potential to benefit many hearing-impaired patients. Hybrid devices allow the preservation of residual hearing in an ear as the patient uses both cochlear implant technology and a traditional hearing aid apparatus in the same ear.
