Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia

Overview

Mayo Clinic doctors have extensive experience in treating chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and Mayo is a world leader in developing innovative ways to diagnose and treat this disorder. A team of experts from different medical specialties work together to find the most appropriate treatment for each patient with CML. An integrated approach is essential to achieve the optimal outcome for the patient.

Diagnosis

A careful examination, along with bone marrow biopsies and genetic testing, are necessary to diagnose CML. Read more about diagnosis of chronic myelogenous leukemia.

Treatment Options

Effective treatments for chronic myelogenous leukemia have been developed in recent years to offer new hope to patients. Treatments offered at Mayo Clinic include established drug regimens, bone marrow transplantation and experimental therapies. Read more about treatment options for chronic myelogenous leukemia.

About Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia

Chronic myelogenous leukemia (also called CML or chronic granulocytic leukemia) is a slowly progressing blood and bone marrow disease that usually occurs during or after middle age, and rarely in children. Normally, the body produces bone marrow stem cells (immature cells) that develop into mature blood cells.

In CML, the body tells too many bone marrow stem cells to develop into a type of white blood cell called granulocytes. Some of these bone marrow stem cells never become mature white blood cells. These are called blasts. Over time, the granulocytes and blasts crowd out the red blood cells and platelets in the bone marrow.
