A genetic discovery (single nucleotide polymorphism) made at Mayo Clinic related to chondrosarcoma may make it possible to correlate local recurrence and long-term survival of the disease. Studies of a larger numbers of patients are needed to further determine the significance of this research project. In addition to determining prognosis, understanding this mechanism may lead to the development of novel biologic therapies.
In addition to laboratory research, Mayo Clinic is also a leader in clinical research related to bone cancer. Large numbers of chondrosarcoma patients are treated at Mayo. This makes it possible to follow their progress for many years and provides researchers with valuable information for the ongoing fight against chondrosarcoma.
