The M.L. Simpson Foundation Trust of Jackson, Ga., has donated $1 million to Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville to fund research fellowships in Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The Simpson gift and philanthropy from an anonymous donor are funding several research fellowships in the Department of Neuroscience. Support for research fellowships helps Mayo Clinic recruit the brightest young investigators and clinicians. It also helps fund work that is essential for attracting long-term funding from the National Institutes of Health and other government agencies. Examples of successes that have emerged from this type of philanthropy to Mayo in Jacksonville include the launching of a large, multicenter study on stroke genetics and several important discoveries about Alzheimer's disease and other brain disorders.
Classes for both programs are held at the St. Luke's Hospital campus. For class dates, times and other information, please call (904) 296-3733.

Researchers at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville are participating in an international, Phase III study that will determine whether limiting radiation therapy to only the tumor site after lumpectomy is as effective as irradiating the whole breast in treating early stage breast cancer. In this study, women with early stage breast cancer will undergo a lumpectomy and then be randomly assigned to partial breast irradiation (PBI) therapy or whole breast irradiation (WBI) therapy. Three thousand women will participate in this study worldwide. Women who are assigned to the WBI group will receive radiation therapy daily five days a week for five to seven weeks, while those assigned to the PBI group will receive radiation therapy twice a day for five days over a one- to two-week period for up to 10 days. The therapy is safe and well-tolerated by patients and may offer convenience since it is delivered over a shorter period of time. For more information, call (904) 953-1040.
