O'Connor appointed
president of tumor society

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Mary O'Connor has been elected president of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society. A member since 1995, O'Connor has served on the society's board in several capacities and was installed as president in July at the group's annual meeting in Long Beach, Calif.

Perez named to
federal cancer board

Cancer specialist Dr. Edith Perez has been appointed to the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Board of Scientific Advisors. The board is responsible for overseeing extramural programs, approving concepts for research and development contracts and serving as NCI liaison to several national meetings.

Upcoming health lecture

Mayo Clinic Health Forum presents "The Heart of Electrophysiology" with Dr. Fred Kusumoto, Cardiovascular Diseases, Nov. 18. The program begins at 7 p.m. in Kinne Auditorium at Mayo Clinic. Reservations: (904) 953-0770.

Support for patients and caregivers

The Cancer Support Group for all cancer patients meets every Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. at St. Luke's Hospital in the Joe Adams Building, Room 2030. The free meetings include discussions of cancer concerns and experiences and feature occasional guest speakers. Info: (904) 953-6904.

Caring & Sharing is Mayo Clinic's support group for patients with breast cancer. Physicians and others discuss issues relating to breast cancer. Peer support group follows. The free meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month and begin at 6:30 p.m. in Kinne Auditorium at Mayo Clinic. Reservations: (904) 953-0707.

Hope & Healing is Mayo Clinic's gynecological cancer survivor support group. The group meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in Kinne Auditorium at Mayo Clinic. The free meetings feature speakers who address gynecological cancer issues. Reservations: (904) 953-0612.

The Alzheimer's Disease Caregiver Support Group is for those who provide care for a loved one with dementia. The group meets the third Friday of each month at 10 a.m. in the Cannaday Building, Room 1107, Mayo Clinic. The free meetings focus on Alzheimer's disease and the challenges facing caregivers.
