Celiac Disease

Symptoms

There are no typical symptoms of celiac disease; however, most patients have general complaints of:

  • Diarrhea
  • Weight loss
  • Abdominal gas
  • Bloating
  • Anemia
  • Growth failure (in children)

Celiac disease may also present itself in less obvious ways, including:

  • Irritability/depression
  • Stomach upset
  • Constipation
  • Joint pain
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fatigue
  • Menstrual abnormalities or infertility
  • Headaches
  • Muscle cramps
  • Skin rash
  • Mouth sores
  • Dental and bone disorders
  • Tingling in the legs and feet (neuropathy)

Symptoms may also mimic other conditions, such as:

  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Gastric ulcers
  • Crohn's disease
  • Parasite infections
  • Anemia
  • Nervous conditions
