REAL LIFE

UNIT SECRETARY

LINDA

I always feel like I am part of the Mayo family. I don't know what it is, but there is a family feeling. We are all organized and work in an atmosphere of teamwork to meet the needs of the patient.

Being a unit secretary is like running a small business. I have to meet the nurses who are on duty for the day, complete doctor orders and make sure every patient is logged in and out; and the histories, X-rays, medications or anything else that comes with them has to leave with them. Everything is a legal process so every nurse has to document it before it leaves my hands. I spend about a third of my time on the computer, and the rest of my time on the phone and with people. These daily tasks are done to support the patients' stay at the hospital.

I love knowing that I am helping people during my shift. I like it when someone needs me. On a daily basis, I try to be humane, supportive, to communicate with my co-workers and solve problems. I try to keep things running smoothly.

Health-care opportunities seem limitless. If you have a job and you don't like it, you always choose another path.
