RESPIRATORY THERAPIST
Daily Tasks
Evaluates, treats and monitors patients with heart and lung abnormalities, primarily critically ill patients. Maintains the equipment necessary for the care of the critically ill. Provides emergency and routine airway management and resuscitation services, and serves as an educational resource for respiratory care questions.
Skills/Talents
Communications skills, positive personality, human relations skills, multitasking, self-motivated, ability to work independently, ability to work with a team, professional image, respect diversity, flexibility, honesty and caring attitude towards people. Abilities in math and science a must.
Work Setting
Patient rooms in the hospital.
Work Hours
Varied work schedules including day, evening and night shifts, along with weekend and holiday hours.
Education
Graduation from an accredited school of respiratory therapy.
Qualifications
Successful completion of the national registry and extensive experience with mechanical ventilation, airway management and hemodynamic monitoring.
Recommended High School Classes
college prep, food and nutrition, healthcare sciences, advanced sciences (biology and chemistry), advanced math, anatomy/physiology, physical education, second language and psychology
