REAL LIFE

RESPIRATORY THERAPIST

MICHAEL

Mayo Clinic fosters teamwork and everyone here is really friendly. The doctors are great to work with. It is a really wonderful workforce.

I help people with breathing problems. Generally, I am assigned about 12 patients each day. I assess patients during hospital rounds every four hours. If they are on a mechanical ventilator I check the machine to make sure everything is going okay, and check lung sounds. If the patient has an artificial airway, I make sure it is in the right place. After morning rounds I follow the doctors on their rounds. I work with hemodynamic monitoring which means using catheters to evaluate patients' heart functions. We also do arterial line placements, which is a catheter that goes into the patient's artery to measure blood pressure. I also insert airway tubes down the trachea to help patients breathe.

I love working with patients and being able to improve their lives in some way. It's nice to establish friendships with families and gain their trust. If family members don't trust you, they don't want you working on their loved ones.

There is a lot of respect for Mayo Clinic employees. You feel like the whole community is behind the work that Mayo performs and it's a great feeling to be part of that team.
