REAL LIFE

MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTIONIST

JON

Don't just choose a career that pays well -- make sure it is something that you enjoy.

My typical day consists of listening to dictations about patients made by doctors and physical therapists in the areas of Sports Medicine and Neurology. I enter their words into the electronic medical record to document the patient care delivered. Our patients have all kinds of ailments so I am learning new medical terminology every day. This creates an environment of constant learning that I enjoy. My job also allows me to work with students in the medical secretary/transcriptionist program, showing them the "real-life" particulars of this job and mentoring them in their career development progress.

When you are considering a career to pursue, make sure that it is something that you will truly enjoy. Don't just choose a career that might pay well but is something that you won't enjoy. You will be working a long time, so you need to make sure that your career will make you happy and satisfied.

It is an honor and privilege to be a member of the Mayo Clinic team.
