TAMMY
I think Mayo takes good care of its employees. If you look at the broad spectrum, you realize that we are supported. Mayo pays well, the benefits are good and there is backup child care, even if your child is sick.
I am the secretary for a doctor in Endocrinology. I never do the same thing every day. There is the usual typing and dictation for my physician, but other than that, my tasks are constantly changing. I spend a good portion of my day scheduling appointments for patients. I help provide prescription refills for patients, answer phone calls and e-mail (e-mailing patients has been a growing trend), and schedule trips for the doctor. Dealing with different people always brings freshness to my daily experiences. Multitasking is huge in my job. I like the challenges. The variety -- you are constantly doing something different every day.
I get to interact with many different people -- other secretaries in the office, physicians, desk personnel, patient service representatives, clinical assistants and appointment secretaries. Working with these people is wonderful. I love meeting patients in person who I've previously communicated with just by phone.
I'm proud of my work at Mayo, plus it's fun. The work is balanced with some social experiences. I don't think of it as coming to work, it's more like, "I get to go see all my friends."
