REAL LIFE

HEMODIALYSIS PATIENT CARE TECHNICIAN

BETSY

As part of the team I know that I'm making a difference in the lives of others; it's great to be part of an organization committed to the best patient care possible.

As a hemodialysis patient care technician, I support patients during their dialysis treatment. This includes obtaining and recording vital signs as well as initiating, monitoring and discontinuing patients from their dialysis treatment.

There are many technical aspects of the job, too, such as dialysis machine set-up, water monitoring and working with various pieces of the equipment. I work hard to maintain a safe environment in partnership with the health care team of nurses and other hemodialysis technicians. We get pretty busy, but we pull together as a team to provide the best care.

It's been a great job while I've been in nursing school. If dialysis is your passion, you can work your way up in the field. There are opportunities as a nurse, nurse manager, nurse educator and nurse practitioner, or even beyond.

As an employer, Mayo Clinic supports this continuing education through their tuition reimbursement, so that's really great while you're going to school. Ultimately you have to make a plan. It will change and that's okay, but you have to come up with a plan and start working towards it. Get involved in opportunities and experiences that will allow you to explore, grow and clarify exactly where you belong.

I love how every day presents a new learning opportunity and challenges that I can grow from.
