I am very proud to work at Mayo Clinic. I love what I do ... I have had so many patients tell me what a great experience they have had here. Many were seen elsewhere without getting a diagnosis, so they think highly of Mayo because we gave them answers. Each one of us plays a part in that reputation.
I perform tests on the nerves, brain waves and spinal cords of patients. We are looking for sleep disorders, seizures, migraines and brain tumors. The tests usually last about an hour, but it also takes about an hour to get the patient ready. A typical test would be an EEG brain wave test. First I measure the patient's head. Then I glue electrodes to the patient's head and for about an hour I record brain waves. Each day is different which is what I love about this job. Many days typically end at 4 p.m. Every couple of months I am on-call, so I have to carry a pager after I leave work. I could be called at any time during the night with an emergency, so I have to be prepared.
I love the challenge of this work. Every patient is different so you have to be flexible because some patients are sick and they don't move well. I like meeting people from all over the world. I like helping people. They are always very thankful for what you do. At first it is really difficult to see children who are really sick. You have to try not to take that home with you. I try to block out the sad stories, which can be difficult. Strong people skills are important for this job, along with empathy. You have to understand when patients are in a lot pain or are very sick.
Mayo Clinic offers a lot of education opportunities, so if I decide to change what I'm doing, I can take classes to work in a different occupation. Mayo will help pay for your schooling.
