DIANNA
One mistake some of my classmates made was selecting a college and then looking at its programs, not even knowing what they wanted to do. What you should do first is develop a career interest and then pick a school or college that will help you pursue that career.
I am assigned to two construction managers. I handle work orders, enter data into a computer, schedule meetings, receive and handle e-mail, touch base with my two assigned construction managers and handle paperwork called transmittals for ongoing projects. I also interact with contractors that Mayo has hired for new construction. The contractors come in and out getting keys and asking questions about work orders. I spend about 85 percent of my time on the computer and the rest of the time talking with people.
Being organized and having a good memory are important skills for this job. You have to remember many things at once and things from as far back as a year ago. You also have to be able to multitask -- be able to work on your computer, answer a contractor's question and take a phone call without getting stressed out.
I go home every day knowing that I had a full day ... it is never boring. You are always learning something new and the clinic is always offering education about new programs.
