The Mayo Clinic Teacher Externship is a continuing education graduate credit course for secondary career educators, health occupations educators and counselors. Developed in partnership between the Minnesota Hospital Association and Augsburg College, the program educates participants about health care occupations. The healthcare industry realizes that many students considering possible careers in health care are poorly informed of the vast career opportunities available. This program will present educators with an opportunity to advance their knowledge of healthcare careers and position them as ambassadors to carry this information to the students they work with on a daily basis.
The enrolled educators and counselors will first complete an orientation with Augsburg College and MHA in early June at Augsburg College. This orientation session reviews the program's requirements, assignments and answers questions. To complete the assignments, educators and counselors will spend 40 hours at Mayo Clinic observing, interviewing and learning about health care professions. The experience will take place during the summer months and must be completed by the time school starts.
Educators interested in the program can e-mail careerawareness@mayo.edu to inquire about the status and availability.
