Cardiovascular Diseases in Minnesota

Mayo Heart Failure Clinic in Minnesota

Dr. Redfield

"Heart failure patients really benefit most from a particular disease management strategy, and that's what we provide – not only medication, but surgery, devices, diagnostic testing, behavior modification and lifestyle changes – all that are specific to their heart failure."

Margaret M. Redfield, M.D.
Director

Typically, heart failure is the end stage of a number of heart conditions and diseases. Because different heart diseases result in different forms of heart failure, patients require precise diagnosis and careful treatment by specially trained physicians. Mayo is a world leader in diagnosing and treating heart failure.

The Heart Failure Clinic in Minnesota is one of the largest and most experienced in the world, having treated nearly 8,000 patients since 1991. With a proven and specialized practice in heart failure, the clinic's 15 physicians also are able to draw on the broader expertise of Mayo's cardiovascular department.

Patients with advanced heart failure or those who need a ventricular assist device (VAD) may be referred to Mayo's new Advanced Heart Failure Clinic. Mayo's expertise in treating heart failure offers hope of prolonged life and improved quality of life to patients who have found limited options elsewhere.

Comprehensive Care

At Mayo, patients benefit from a team approach to patient care. Doctors from different specialties work together to offer each patient comprehensive care and the convenience of treatment in one location. Care is truly integrated, from diagnosis to treatment to follow-up.

To determine the type and progression of each patient's heart failure, cardiologists use Mayo's special diagnostic areas:

  • Echocardiography
  • Cardiac catheterization
  • Nuclear cardiology
  • Electrophysiology

Depending on the care a patient requires, heart failure cardiologists may involve the following Mayo specialists:

  • Heart rhythm specialists (electrophysiologists)
  • Exercise physiologists
  • Sleep disorders specialists (Mayo Clinic is a world leader in the connection between sleep disorders and heart failure.)
  • Mechanical support device specialists
  • Cardiac surgeons
  • Transplant physicians and surgeons

The Heart Failure Clinic team also works with patients' local physicians and laboratory testing facilities to optimize follow-up care.

The Mayo team of professionals provides excellence in outpatient care and a specialized inpatient program for patients requiring hospitalization. In the hospital, patients' care is directed and monitored by heart failure specialists.

Research Offers New Hope

The Heart Failure Clinic has an active clinical research program, giving Mayo patients opportunities to participate in experimental therapies not available elsewhere. The research program gives hope to patients who have tried standard treatments with no success. Researchers cooperate with other institutions in multicenter trials. Some Mayo-initiated trials are exclusive to Mayo patients.
