Mayo Heart Failure Clinic in Rochester

Dr. Redfield

"Heart failure patients really benefit most from a particular disease management strategy, and that's what we provide – not only medication, but surgery, devices, diagnostic testing, behavior modification and lifestyle changes – all that are specific to their heart failure."

Margaret M. Redfield, M.D.
Director

Heart failure is a chronic disease in which the heart's ability to receive and or pump blood is impaired so much that the heart can no longer meet the body's needs. The disease currently affects 5 million Americans, with over 500,000 new cases diagnosed per year. Typically, heart failure is the end stage of a number of heart conditions and diseases, including high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, heart valve problems, systemic diseases or congenital heart disease.

Different heart diseases result in different forms of heart failure, each having its own specific therapy. Patients with heart failure require precise diagnosis, and then careful treatment and monitoring – so they can benefit most from care at a specialized heart failure clinic by a physician trained in heart failure.

Mayo Offers Comprehensive Care

Mayo Heart Failure Clinic in Rochester is one of the largest and most experienced in the nation, having treated nearly 8,000 patients since opening in 1991. The clinic's cardiologists and nurses have special training in heart failure, and are experts in the diagnosis and treatment of both common and rare forms of the disease.

Patients with heart failure often require a teamwork approach to their care. Our clinic staff participates in a truly integrated care system, from diagnosis to treatment to follow-up.

To determine the type and progression of each patient's heart failure, our cardiologists utilize Mayo's special diagnostic areas, such as:

  • Echocardiography
  • Cardiac catheterization
  • Nuclear cardiology
  • Electrophysiology

Then, depending on the care required for each patient, the heart failure cardiologists work with these specialists:

  • Heart rhythm specialists (Electrophysiologists)
  • Exercise physiologists
  • Sleep disorders specialists (Mayo Clinic is a world leader in the connection between sleep disorders and heart failure)
  • Mechanical support device specialists
  • Cardiac surgeons
  • Transplantation physicians and surgeons

Beyond the walls of Mayo Clinic, the Heart Failure Clinic team also is committed to sharing care with our patients' primary physicians. We work with local physicians and laboratory testing facilities to optimize follow-up of the patient's care.

Our team of professionals provides excellence in outpatient care while offering a specialized inpatient program for patients requiring hospitalization. When these patients are in the hospital, their care is directed and monitored by heart failure specialists.

Research Offers New Hope

The Heart Failure Clinic has an active clinical research program, giving our patients opportunities to participate in experimental therapies not available elsewhere. Our researchers cooperate with other institutions in multicenter trials, but several Mayo-initiated trials are exclusive to Mayo patients. The research program gives hope to patients who have tried standard treatments with no success.
