Cardiothoracic Surgery in Florida

Overview

Cardiac and thoracic surgeons at Mayo Clinic in Florida specialize in diagnosing and surgically treating disorders of the heart, lung and chest. Our cardiothoracic surgeons perform hundreds of operations each year using state-of-the-art technology, including minimally invasive techniques and "off bypass" machine heart procedures. Mayo Clinic offers the full spectrum of cardiothoracic surgical services, including ventricular assist devices and transplantation.

Mayo Clinic physicians work together as an integrated, multidisciplinary team to treat conditions of the heart, lung and chest. In most cases, it takes only two to three days for patients to be evaluated and surgery (when necessary) to be scheduled. The surgeons work in partnership with physician colleagues in other areas, especially the departments of Cardiovascular Diseases, Pulmonary Medicine and Hematology/Oncology, to provide multispecialty expertise in heart and chest problems. Physicians are aided by an experienced, highly skilled support staff.

Hospitalized patients are cared for on a specialized cardiothoracic surgery unit that incorporates state-of-the-art monitoring and a modern on-floor cardiopulmonary rehabilitation center. Comprehensive education, including heart and lung health and nutritional instruction, begins when patients are prepared for surgery and continues through recovery and the return home. Our goal is to make sure patients are comfortable throughout their stay and to attend to their recovery needs efficiently and compassionately.
