Cardiothoracic Surgery in Florida

Overview

Cardiac and thoracic surgeons at Mayo Clinic in Florida have specialized training in diagnosing and surgically treating diseases of the heart, lung, chest, esophagus, diaphragm and blood vessels (cardiac and thoracic diseases). The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery offers the full spectrum of cardiothoracic surgical services, including ventricular assist devices and heart and lung transplantation. Cardiothoracic surgeons perform advanced procedures including minimally invasive surgery and "off-pump bypass" heart procedures.

Mayo Clinic doctors work together as an integrated team to treat people who have cardiac or thoracic conditions. The cardiac and thoracic surgeons work with doctors in many areas, including cardiovascular diseases, pulmonary medicine, hematology/oncology and neurology, when caring for people who have cardiac and thoracic conditions. An experienced, highly skilled support staff aids doctors.

In most cases, your evaluation and scheduling of any needed surgery can be completed in two to three days. During hospitalization, you receive care in a cardiothoracic surgery unit and a cardiopulmonary rehabilitation center.

Heart and lung health and nutrition education begins when you prepare for surgery. Instruction continues after surgery, through your recovery and when you return home. Division staff seeks to make you comfortable throughout your stay and help you recover quickly.
