Cardiac Surgery

Overview

Cardiac and thoracic surgeons at Mayo Clinic specialize in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of disorders of the heart, lung and chest. Mayo Clinic has more than 20 cardiac and thoracic surgeons on staff who have extensive experience in cardiac surgery and thoracic surgery.

Mayo Clinic offers the full spectrum of cardiothoracic and cardiovascular surgical services. Mayo Clinic surgeons perform thousands of cardiac and thoracic surgeries each year using state-of-the-art technology, including minimally invasive techniques, ventricular assist device implantation and "off-pump bypass" heart procedures. In most cases, your evaluation and scheduling of any needed surgery can be completed in two to three days.

The Mayo Model of Care emphasizes an integrated team approach to providing the most appropriate care. Cardiovascular and cardiothoracic surgeons work closely with doctors and colleagues in cardiovascular diseases, vascular medicine, pulmonary medicine, gastroenterology/hepatology, hematology, oncology and many other areas. Pediatric cardiologists care for children with heart conditions at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.

Mayo Clinic surgeons are active in research and in clinical trials to evaluate new approaches for treatment of heart, lung and chest conditions. Surgeons continually analyze their large-volume surgical practice for ways to improve your care.
