How Mayo Clinic Touches Me

"I actually came to Mayo Clinic as an undergraduate in the summer fellowship program.

"They really want to see us succeed, and I thought that was huge ..."
— Mambidzeni Madzivire

In the doctoral program here, I'm in the biomedical engineering track and my specific field of study is kind of a combination of physiology and medical imaging. Being from Zimbabwe, I also have an interest in global health activities. Being at Mayo Clinic has helped me to explore those opportunities and to see what outstanding research facilities are like in the United States.

There's a lot I would tell other students who are considering coming to Mayo. I think, I'll highlight something that was very important to me making my decision to come here. I interviewed at other schools and I didn't quite find the same level of collegiality. There's a lot of investment in the students being successful here, so everyone from a fellow student to the program directors and the graduate school administration, they really want to see us succeed. I thought that was huge because I knew that graduate school was going to be tough coming in, so I wanted to come into a supportive environment that would help me be the best I could be.

I would definitely use words to describe Mayo Clinic such as collaborative, really inspiring, patient oriented. I think, oh, it's tough, so tough to use just one word.

It's not about me as a student. It's not about a researcher. You know, it's not about the doctor. It's about the patient."
