Risks

Risk Factors for calciphylaxis include:

  • Abnormal calcium and phosphate levels
  • Hyperparathyroidism
  • Kidney transplant
  • Not following dietary, medical, and/or dialysis prescriptions
  • Long-term obesity
  • Recent and sudden weight loss
  • Infusion of medications such as iron dextran
  • Aluminum toxicity
  • Blood clotting abnormalities
  • The use of immunosuppressive agents, especially corticosteroids
  • Warfarin therapy, an anticoagulant
  • Vascular calcification
  • Cirrhosis, rheumatoid arthritis
