Breast Clinic in Minnesota

Breast Imaging and Intervention

positive X-ray

Mammogram showing breast tumor

Breast Imaging and Intervention (BII) performs screening and diagnostic mammograms, breast ultrasound examinations, and image-guided breast biopsies. Radiologists interpret mammograms and perform breast ultrasounds and needle biopsies in order to determine whether an abnormal mammogram, breast lump, or other clinically suspicious breast condition is cancerous.

The Breast Imaging and Intervention practice offers these capabilities:

  • Accredited full-service screening and diagnostic mammography
  • Radiologists with expertise and experience in all areas of breast imaging and intervention
  • State-of-the-art equipment including mammography machines, dedicated breast ultrasound units, and computer-assisted diagnosis in screening practice
  • Breast MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)
  • Minimally invasive needle biopsies with stereotactic or ultrasound guidance
  • Routine 24- to 48-hour turnaround for biopsy scheduling and availability of results
  • Expert breast pathologist review of biopsy tissue

Research has shown that facilities where procedures are frequently performed have better outcomes. Each year the experienced staff at Mayo Clinic perform approximately 45,000 mammograms, 5,600 ultrasound breast examinations, and 1,000 core biopies. Annual training in cutting-edge technique keeps Mayo staff at the forefront of the field.
