Breast Cancer

Treatment in Florida

Mayo Clinic in Florida provides comprehensive and personalized diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer through the Breast Center. Treatment is available for newly diagnosed patients, as well as those with recurrent or advanced disease. Diagnostic evaluations are thorough yet streamlined to reduce the anxiety-producing waiting times between tests, appointments and results. Services are available for women and men who need evaluation of a new breast lump or other breast symptoms, who have an abnormal mammogram or who have been diagnosed with cancer.

The initial appointment is usually scheduled for the morning. Necessary tests, including imaging scans, biopsies and consultations with breast and plastic surgeons, other cancer specialists or our breast health nurse educator, can often be scheduled beginning the same afternoon.

When biopsies are necessary, most patients receive a core needle or mammotome biopsy with either stereotactic or ultrasound guidance. Our physicians were among the first in the country to offer state-of-the-art biopsies guided by magnetic resonance imaging. These biopsies can eliminate the need for surgery if the problem tissue is benign or can be used to formulate a better surgical plan when cancer is identified.

Biopsy results are usually available within 48 hours or less. If the diagnosis is cancer, treatment planning can begin almost immediately and will involve input from a surgeon, plastic surgeon, medical oncologist and radiation oncologist, as well as support staff. Patients also have immediate access to the latest clinical trials, both for breast cancer treatment and prevention.

The Breast Center in Florida provides:

  • State-of-the-art screening and diagnostic services, including mammography, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), image-guided breast biopsies and surgical biopsies.
