Brachytherapy

Treatment in Florida

Physicians at Mayo Clinic in Florida have extensive experience with brachytherapy, especially in treating gynecologic tumors, melanoma of the eye, and cancers of the thyroid, prostate and bile duct. In prostate cancer, more than 100 patients have been treated with brachytherapy, and Mayo Jacksonville physicians have reported results at several national medical meetings. Our radiation oncology services are accredited by the American College of Radiology, which certifies our commitment to quality. Radiation Oncology is part of the Mayo Comprehensive Cancer Center. Eligible cancer patients may be offered an opportunity to participate in clinical research studies designed by Mayo researchers and others.

Treatment Team

Mayo Clinic emphasizes a collaborative approach to care. Brachytherapy involves a team from Radiation Oncology. The team consists of physicians, radiation therapists, dosimetrists, physicists, oncology nurses and administrative staff. The medical staff work together to develop a treatment plan appropriate for each patient. Radiation oncologists also coordinate therapy with other physicians involved in each patients' care.

Each radiation oncologist at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville specializes in treating certain types of cancers. This specialization assures that patients receive care from someone who is highly skilled at treating their specific cancer.
