Bladder cancer is the sixth most common cancer in the United States. About 53,200 people are diagnosed each year. It occurs more often in Caucasians and males, and becomes more common as people age. Cancer that is limited to the inner lining of the bladder is called superficial or "in situ" cancer, and is the easiest form of bladder cancer to treat. About 75 percent of all bladder cancers are detected at this early stage, and the survival rate is greater than 90 percent. However, superficial bladder cancer has a high recurrence rate. Treatment becomes more difficult and the survival rate decreases if the cancer has spread beyond the bladder's inner lining.
