Bladder Cancer

Symptoms

Bladder cancer often produces no warning signs or symptoms in its early stages. A first warning sign is often blood in the urine (hematuria), with urine appearing reddish or darker than normal. In some cases, blood may show up only on a urine test. Other symptoms can include:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Frequent urination
  • Feeling the need to urinate but being unable to
  • Urgency
  • Painful urination
  • Slowing of urinary stream

Hematuria and the other symptoms listed above can result from more common conditions such as urinary tract infections, kidney disease, kidney or bladder stones, or prostate problems. Consult with your doctor to determine whether your symptoms are due to bladder cancer or another condition. If bladder cancer is confirmed, your doctor will discuss your treatment options with you to decide on the most appropriate approach for your needs.
