Bladder cancer

Overview

Bladder cancer is a type of cancer that begins in your bladder — a balloon-shaped organ in your pelvic area that stores urine.

Bladder cancer treatment often involves surgery. At the earliest stages, surgery may be minimally invasive to remove just the area of bladder cancer, leaving the bladder intact and maintaining the ability to urinate normally. At later stages of bladder cancer, surgery may involve removing the entire bladder and creating a new outlet for urine to leave the body. In some cases, a new bladder can be fashioned from a piece of intestine, allowing you to urinate normally.

The great majority of bladder cancers are diagnosed at an early stage — when bladder cancer is highly treatable. Yet, even when diagnosed at an early stage, bladder cancer is likely to recur. Bladder cancer survivors undergo frequent follow-up tests to look for bladder cancer recurrence.
