Dr. Roenigk graduated from Northwestern University Medical School in 1981, completed an internship at St. Paul Ramsey County (now Regions) Hospital followed by dermatology residency at the University of Minnesota before completing his fellowship in Dermatologic Surgery (Mohs) at the Cleveland Clinic. In 1986 he joined the staff at Mayo Clinic to start the surgical practice in the department of dermatology where in 1990 he also started their fellowship program, training over 43 surgical fellows thus far. In 1998 he was appointed chair of the Department of Dermatology at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale and in 2000 chair of Department of Dermatology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. In 2007 he was honored by Mayo Clinic as the Robert H. Kieckhefer Professor in Dermatology.

Dr. Roenigk served as a member and chair of the Residency Review Committee for Dermatology of ACGME from 1994-2000 and 2002-2010.  He was elected a director of the American Board of Dermatology in 2000 and President in 2009.  In 2013 he was appointed as the Assistant Executive Director of ABD and in 2021 the Executive Director of ABD. In 2011 he was honored by the American College of Mohs Surgery with the Fredrick E Mohs, M.D. Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Dr. Roenigk maintains a surgical practice at Mayo Clinic that includes teaching residents and fellows and has authored 223 peer review articles and two books, including three editions of his textbook Dermatologic Surgery; Principles and Practice co-edited with his father, Dr. Henry Roenigk. He has been married to Julie for 41 years and share two children and a grandchild.
