Atherosclerosis

Treatment in Minnesota

All of the diagnosis and treatment options described in these pages are available at Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

The Early Atherosclerosis Clinic, based within the Cardiology and Vascular Medicine Division at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, offers comprehensive assessment and personalized treatment for a unique group of cardiovascular patients who fit one of two categories:

  • People who, before age 55, have had a heart attack or have experienced intermittent claudication, where the person has pain, cramping or weakness in the legs with walking or other physical activities, due to hardening of the arteries in the legs (peripheral arterial disease).
  • People who have a biological parent or sibling who had a heart attack or intermittent claudication before age 55.

The purpose of the clinic is to identify high-risk patients and to help them reduce the risks, short-term and long-term, caused by early onset of atherosclerosis.
