Types
Asthma is generally classified as intermittent or persistent depending on how often attacks occur. Persistent asthma may be mild, moderate or severe.
Other types of asthma include:
- Extrinsic (allergic) asthma. An allergic reaction triggers asthma.
- Intrinsic asthma. In intrinsic asthma, something other than allergies causes your symptoms.
- Exercise-induced asthma. Activity, such as running or swimming, causes symptoms.
- Occupational asthma. Your workplace causes or triggers your asthma.
- Cough-variant asthma. Asthma causes a persistent cough.
- Chronic severe corticosteroid-dependent asthma. With this type, you need continued treatment with oral corticosteroids.
- Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis. Fungi in your lung cause an allergic reaction.
