Asthma

Types

Asthma is generally classified as intermittent or persistent depending on how often attacks occur. Persistent asthma may be mild, moderate or severe.

Other types of asthma include:

  • Extrinsic (allergic) asthma. An allergic reaction triggers asthma.
  • Intrinsic asthma. In intrinsic asthma, something other than allergies causes your symptoms.
  • Exercise-induced asthma. Activity, such as running or swimming, causes symptoms.
  • Occupational asthma. Your workplace causes or triggers your asthma.
  • Cough-variant asthma. Asthma causes a persistent cough.
  • Chronic severe corticosteroid-dependent asthma. With this type, you need continued treatment with oral corticosteroids.
  • Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis. Fungi in your lung cause an allergic reaction.
