The Division of Cardiovascular Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester performs both clinical and laboratory research regarding aortic aneurysm disease.
The Clinical Research group regularly conducts retrospective analyses of patient records at Mayo Clinic in Rochester and in Olmsted County, Minn. Many studies have established the groundwork for the basic understanding of aortic aneurysm disease and its natural history. In addition, prospective studies are under way to investigate the use of new devices such as stent-graft technology in the treatment of aneurysmal disease of the thoracic and abdominal aorta.
Researchers in basic science laboratories in Cardiovascular Surgery are focused on understanding bicuspid aortic valve disease and its association with ascending aortic aneurysms. The research includes family studies to understand the inheritance of both bicuspid aortic valve disease and aneurysm disease, as well as analysis of tissue removed at surgery using the most modern techniques of genetic and genomic analysis. This work is supported by a grant from Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research.
