Mayo Clinic Discovery selected for Science's Top 10 Achievements of 2011

The editors of the journal Science have selected a Mayo Clinic discovery as one of their top 10 "groundbreaking scientific achievements of 2011." The Mayo study — the first to eliminate the effects of aging in mice — received worldwide attention when it was published in Nature in November. The study showed that the onset of age-related disorders and disabilities could be delayed or prevented by eliminating senescent cells: cells that have become "deadbeat" and are no longer dividing. Mayo Clinic researcher honored with prestigious award for Dementia research

The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) has awarded the 2011 Potamkin Prize to Dennis Dickson, M.D., a neuropathologist at Mayo Clinic in Florida and the Robert E. Jacoby Professor for Alzheimer's Disease Research. The Potamkin Prize honors researchers for their efforts advancing the understanding of Pick's disease, Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. Milestone for Mayo Clinic: 100th heart transplant performed

Mayo Clinic in Arizona has performed its 100th heart transplant since the program opened in the fall of 2005 — a significant milestone, given that Mayo Clinic is the only medical center doing adult heart transplants in Maricopa County. Mayo Clinic in Arizona is a leader in mechanical circulatory support devices, including VADs and the total artificial heart. Read more.

Mayo Clinic named a top liver transplant center

Mayo Clinic in Florida was named one of the top liver transplant centers in the country by HealthGrades, the leading independent health care ratings organization. The organization used data calculated by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients to evaluate the 230 adult acute care hospitals in the United States that offer heart, kidney, lung, or liver transplants. They chose 19 hospitals as top transplants centers and, within this list, Mayo Clinic in Florida was one of six recipients for excellence in liver transplant out of 134 hospitals performing this transplant specialty evaluated in the survey. Mayo Clinic named to U.S. News Best Hospitals List for 22nd year

U.S. News & World Report has named Mayo Clinic to its annual list of "Best Hospitals" for the 22nd year. Hospitals included in the Honor Roll, such as Mayo Clinic, are part of a small group recognized for "breadth of excellence," according to the magazine. Read more.

U.S. News names Mayo Clinic in Florida the Top Hospital in Jacksonville

U.S. News & World Report has again named Mayo Clinic's campus in Jacksonville, Fla., to its annual list of "Best Hospitals." Mayo Clinic was named best hospital in the Jacksonville metro area and was ranked nationally among the top 50 hospitals in Cancer and Gastroenterology. Read more.

Mayo Clinic honored with Picker Award for Excellence in Patient-Centered Care

The Picker Awards honor premier organizations for recognizing and acting on the acute need to improve the patient's health care experience as seen "through the patient's eyes." The international award was presented in recognition of Mayo Clinic's "distinguished history of putting every patient first, and of the respect, dignity and quality care that each patient is afforded." For the second year in a row, Mayo Clinic Foundation, representing all three Mayo Clinic sites — Arizona, Florida and Minnesota — has been named to the list of Top 10 Health Systems by Thomson Reuter's. The Thomson Reuter's 10 Top Health Systems study identifies the 10 best health systems in the nation. The annual, quantitative study, uses objective, independent research and public data sources. Mayo Clinic has been named one of the top 10 workplaces in Minnesota by the Star Tribune as part of its 2011 Top 100 Workplaces list.
