Local and global

Health is more than just a doctor's appointment or an x-ray. Health stems from living in a community where everyone has opportunities to live healthfully, learn, work and thrive.

At Mayo Clinic, we work to foster healthy, informed communities — both locally and globally. Our steadfast goal is to connect patients to more resources; reach out to underserved and diverse populations; and translate research findings into action.

A significant economic impact

In 2011, Mayo Clinic collaborated with public, private and nonprofit organizations to make a significant economic impact in local and global communities:

• Providing $62 million in charity care — worldwide
• Investing $3 million in community programs
• Reinvesting $839 million in research and education programs

Serving our local community

In 2011, Mayo Clinic continued its community mission by helping create healthy communities where our employees live and work — Phoenix and Scottsdale, Ariz., Jacksonville, Fla., Rochester, Minn., and Mayo Clinic Health System, a network of clinics and hospitals serving 71 communities in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

One example is a new patient-family advisory council, called One World, which reaches out to diverse communities in Rochester, Minn., especially those with language and cultural barriers. "Mayo Clinic can be intimidating for those who aren't native English speakers," says member Kari Podenski. "One World is finding new ways to meet the community's needs in a culturally sensitive way."

Serving our global community

Our global community is exactly what its name implies. In 2011, Mayo Clinic provided medical research, medical care and volunteer service in more than 54 countries worldwide. Our reach extends far beyond the walls of our hospitals and clinics:

• As part of the Mayo International Health Program (MIHP), Mayo residents and fellows brought medical knowledge, care and treatment to underserved international populations.
• Eight teams of Mayo Clinic employees traveled to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, offering care, education and resources for rebuilding health care.
