The Department of Anesthesiology offers consultation in the comprehensive management of anesthetic care for surgical, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and provides pre- and post-operative care including pain therapy and critical care.
The Pain Clinic within the Department of Anesthesiology is dedicated to the management of acute and chronic pain on an inpatient and outpatient basis. The physicians are all trained anesthesiologists who have either completed pain management fellowships or have substantial practice experience.
New patients are seen only by referrals from another physician either within the Mayo Clinic system or in the community. We primarily see patients with the expectation that injections or other procedures may play a role in treating the patient's painful condition. When injections or procedures are either not successful or not appropriate, management of painful conditions may be treated with various medications.
The Pain Clinic does not provide primary medical care. Conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and general health concerns need to be addressed by a primary care physician. If you are not sure who to call we can provide advice. If you are experiencing an emergency medical condition you should either call 911 or arrange transportation to the nearest emergency room.
