Comparing the Effects of 3 Different Dosing Regimens of Epoetin Alfa, a Medicine Used to Treat Anemia, and a Dosing Schedule of Darbepoetin Alfa, a Different Medicine Used to Treat Anemia, in Patients Diagnosed with Cancer
This study is being done to:
- Compare the effects (good and bad) of 3 different dosing regimens of epoetin alfa, a medicine used to treat anemia, and a dosing schedule of darbepoetin alfa, a different medicine used to treat anemia.
- Find out which one is better at building up red blood cells without blood transfusion.
- Find out if a higher dose given less frequently is better than giving the drug every week, as is commonly done.
- Get a patient's perspective of how epoetin alfa or darbepoetin alfa has changed quality of life.

Study Evaluating Types of Iron and Combining with Darbopoetin Alfa (Aranesp) for Cancer Patients Experiencing Anemia
This study is being done to compare the effects of intravenous (IV) iron, oral iron (i.e., given by mouth), or oral placebo, given along with darbopoetin alfa (an injectable medication designed to raise the red cell count), on the degree of anemia, the need for red cell transfusions, and quality of life in patients with anemia associated with cancer and/ or cancer treatment.
