Mayo Clinic Program for the Study of Mast Cell and Eosinophil Disorders

Mayo Clinic allergy and collaborating physicians are leaders in mast cell and eosinophil-associated disease research. As part of their research, they have discovered several new syndromes and identified how mast cells and eosinophils play a role in a variety of diseases.

Mayo Clinic physicians have a special interest in the diagnosis and treatment of systemic mastocytosis — including mastocytosis in infants and children — mast cell activation syndrome, hypereosinophilic syndrome and eosinophilic leukemia. They have published research findings on:

  • The diagnosis and treatment of hypereosinophilic disorders including hypereosinophilic syndrome and eosinophilic leukemia
  • Eosinophilia and its role in the development of bronchial asthma
  • The role of eosinophils in atopic dermatitis
  • Single-organ eosinophil disorders, such as eosinophilic esophagitis, eosinophilic fasciitis, eosinophilic gastroenteritis and eosinopohilic otitis
  • The diagnosis and treatment of limited and systemic forms of mastocytosis and mast cell activation syndrome
