To enter addiction treatment at Mayo Clinic, you can be referred by your home physician or another member of the health care team, or you can call to request an assessment.
The first step is to complete an intake evaluation by phone, which includes insurance verifications and pre-certification, if possible. Most insurance plans cover a portion or all of treatment costs. Mayo provides a preliminary insurance review to determine the amount of benefit coverage you will have.
After the intake evaluation, the patient receives a comprehensive assessment from Mayo's addiction team. At this initial evaluation, a psychiatrist who specializes in treatment addictions, a licensed alcohol and drug counselor, and a nurse assess the patient's needs from several perspectives. Then, with input from the patient, the team recommends the appropriate treatment.
Mayo Clinic is committed to meeting the needs of each patient. To implement this core value, Mayo Clinic Addiction Services creates an individualized treatment plan for every patient entering an addictions program. This treatment plan includes:
Having a comprehensive plan at the start of treatment ensures that you have the degree of support and structure needed to establish sobriety and progress toward your goals. Length of treatment is based on individual patient needs.
A significant percentage of people with addictions also have depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder or another mental health disorder. Mayo's Addiction Services incorporates treatment for mental health and addictions in the same treatment plan. At Mayo, both disorders can be addressed in the same place, by health care professionals on the same team. Patients also have access to other medical services at Mayo Clinic, if needed.
