Acupuncture

Research

Researchers in the Complementary and Integrative Medicine Program are committed to developing evidence-based treatments that can be combined with conventional medicine. Mayo Clinic doctors are conducting clinical studies to learn more about the effectiveness of complementary and integrative therapies for treating pain and nausea.

A Mayo Clinic study found that pain is the most common reason for use of acupuncture. Among the 904 people studied, 33 percent were being treated for spinal pain, 12 percent for joint pain and 25 percent for other pain. The study, one of the few reports about clinical use of acupuncture at an academic medical center in the U.S., found that 42 percent of the visits weren't covered by health insurance and were paid for by the people treated.
