Mayo Clinic is a leading research center for acoustic neuroma and other tumors of the nervous system. The unique ability of Mayo Clinic to take research from the laboratory to treatments at the bedside means that patients often have access to the most recent advances in surgical procedures and other treatment options. Currently, Mayo Clinic surgeons are comparing the success of microsurgery and radiosurgery for acoustic neuroma.
Particular strengths of the Department of Neurosurgery in advancing the treatment of acoustic neuroma have included research in awake brain surgery, stereotactic radiosurgery and cerebrovascular and skull base neurosurgery.
A great need for research efforts continues, particularly to understand the mechanisms of neurological disease and treatment. Mayo's research progress contributes to improvement in the care and treatment of patients with neurosurgical disease.
In addition, Mayo Clinic's routine practice of monitoring all patients over time adds to physicians' knowledge about how different tumors progress, enabling them to better predict outcomes for each patient.
