Mayo Clinic in Florida emphasizes the team approach to delivering health care services in more than 43 medical and surgical specialties, including programs in cancer treatment, organ transplantation, surgery and neurosciences. Mayo Clinic, which opened in Jacksonville, Florida in 1986, is a premier academic medical center in the Southeast.

Patients who require inpatient hospitalization are admitted to Mayo Clinic hospital, where they receive care from Mayo physicians and health care professionals.

As a tertiary care center, Mayo Clinic in Florida offers patients access to medical, surgical and research staff who are committed to improving patient care through advancing the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions. The clinic also has primary care physicians whose broad medical expertise enhances comprehensive ongoing care. Patient care activities are strengthened by medical education programs and laboratory research focusing on cancer and neurosciences.

All Mayo Clinic medical staff members are salaried. There is no bonus or incentive compensation.

Patients

Each year more than 85,000 patients are diagnosed and treated at Mayo Clinic in Florida. Of those, 68 percent are from Jacksonville and northeast Florida, 10 percent come from the remainder of Florida, 20 percent are from the other 49 states and 2 percent travel from other countries.

Appointments at Mayo Clinic can be made directly or through physician referral, although a referral is not required. Most patients make their own appointments.

Special Services

The Mayo Clinic Executive Health Program is designed to accommodate the schedule of the busy business person by offering a comprehensive physical examination in one day.

Mayo Clinic physicians represent more than 43 medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties ranging from ophthalmology and neurology to urology and orthopedics. This diversity fosters an atmosphere where physicians, nurses and other care providers consult one another for the benefit of the patient. For example, the breast cancer program combines the experience and knowledge of Mayo Clinic oncologists, internists, general and plastic surgeons, radiologists and others.

Facilities

The eight-story Davis Building is the main outpatient clinic building. The Bundy Cafe & Atrium and Mayo Clinic Pharmacy are located on the main floor. The Mayo Clinic hospital, the Transplant Center and other services are located in the Mayo Building. The Cannaday Building houses outpatient clinic services and Kinne Auditorium, as well as a cafe and the Mayo Gift Shop. The hospital's full-service Emergency Department is a community resource open to all, featuring a certified stroke center and a chest pain observation unit.

The three buildings are connected by an enclosed walkway and linked to The Inn at Mayo Clinic, a 78-suite hotel. The Courtyard by Marriott, a 146-room hotel, is located near the entrance of the campus.

The Birdsall Medical Research Building has 10 laboratories where scientists investigate neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's. The Griffin Cancer Research Building was completed in 2002 and is the first building on the Jacksonville campus devoted primarily to cancer research.
