New College Students: How to Apply

Volunteering as a student is a great opportunity to gain experience, build your resume, enhance your college application, learn new skills and meet new people. Volunteering is more than just getting a valuable experience. It’s also about giving back to your community. Student volunteers also bring a fresh perspective and enthusiasm to our clinics, making it a fun program for volunteers and staff alike.

For college students interested in healthcare careers, volunteering at Mayo Clinic offers opportunities to interact with patients and healthcare staff. Volunteers learn firsthand how a large medical center operates.

To participate in the student volunteer program, you must be available to volunteer during regular business hours (Monday through Friday) for an assigned weekly four-hour shift from Monday, June 3 through Friday July 26, 2024. This equates to 36 hours of volunteer service during the summer. Volunteers may not serve more than 12 hours a week.

How to become a volunteer

  1. Attend an information session.

College applicants 18 years old and older are required to attend a mandatory virtual information session. Reservations are required, and space is limited to 30 applicants.

    • Thursday, January 18, 2024, from 6-7 p.m.

Visit our SignUpGenius page to register or use the QR Code shown below.

  2. Complete volunteer application form.

Fill out the paper application. Note:

    • Volunteers must have an email that is regularly checked.
    • Applications will only be available after attendance of the information session.

Completed applications for the 2024 College Student Summer Volunteer Program must be submitted by 4 p.m., Friday, March 1, 2024. Details on how to submit an application will be provided at the information session. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Note:

    • Submission of an application does not guarantee placement into the program.

Upon submission and acceptance of a completed application, you will receive an email inviting you to a virtual interview on Saturday, April 13, 2024.

If accepted into the program, you will receive information about attending the in-person mandatory orientation session, which is scheduled for Saturday, April 27, 2024.

  3. Interview.

Your application and availability will be reviewed. If you receive an interview with a member of the volunteer team, we will provide you with further information about our program and next steps.

  4. Complete a background check and health screening.

Mayo Clinic requires all volunteers to complete a background check and health screening. This will be explained further during the interview process. The health screening will require you to:

    • Provide a current copy of your immunization records (including Covid-19 and influenza if available).
    • Complete a QuantiFERON blood test (at Mayo Clinic's expense) to screen for tuberculosis.
  5. Complete the volunteer on-boarding process.

As a new volunteer, you will participate in orientation and training. All volunteers must agree to follow Mayo Clinic's standards of behavior.
